Bio Dr. Mauvareen Beverley is an executive level physician with 20 years of experience advocating for improving the patient engagement and cultural competence for all populations. She has built a career that bridges the business and clinical sides of the health care system. From 2007 to 2018 she held various positions at NYC Health+Hospital, the largest safety net hospital system. As Associate Executive Director of Queens Health Network, Dr. Beverley developed the first Care Management Program that was recognized as best practice by Deloitte Consultants. This program was adopted by Health+Hospital and resulted in $18M CMS grant inclusive of 6 hospitals. She implemented the First Sickle Cell Patient Support Group transitioning from adolescent to adult care and decreased emergency department visits and readmissions. As Deputy Executive Director of Care Management at Kings County Hospital, Dr. Beverley implemented an interdisciplinary readmission prevention task force to comply with CMS 30-day readmission mandate. The innovative processes decreased readmissions for patients with congestive heart failure from 30.0% to18.7% over 2 years. She also developed a Patient Engagement and Cultural Competence Training Program for medical students, interns and residents that was adopted by Human Resource. As Assistant Vice President and Physician Advisor for the Department of Finance from 2014 to 2018, Dr. Beverley delivered strategic leadership by increasing revenue associated with medical necessity denials and improving communication between finance, case management and clinical teams. She implemented a physician advisor group to review and appeal “Inappropriate Medical Necessity Denials’ by health plans and recouped $8M. In addition, she developed a settlement process for CMS which increased revenue by approximately $5M. Dr. Beverley coordinated the First Conference on Improving the Health of the Elderly Black Population at NYC Health+Hospital/Harlem that focused on improving health outcomes for this English speaking disadvantaged population. In 2019, she formed Mauvareen Beverley, MD, PLLC: Patient Engagement and Cultural Competence Specialists. She was a speaker at the 2019, 34th Annual NAHSE Educational Conference in Washington DC. The topic was The Value of Innovative Patient Engagement Strategies. Dr. Beverley was also a speaker at NorthWell Health Solutions: Diversity and Inclusion Lunch and Learn Education Session, Cultural Competence with Focus on Improving The Health of The Elderly Black Population. Dr. Beverley received her undergraduate degree from Boston University and her MD degree from the University of Buffalo, School of Medicine. She went on to complete her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Harlem Hospital-New York Columbia Presbyterian. She is a Fellow at the New York Academy of Medicine. She is currently in collaboration with The American Association of Medical Colleges and The National Medical Fellowship where she recently conducted a webinar on Patient Engagement and Cultural Competence.
